Operation Southern Watch was initiated in the summer of 1992. with American, British and French aircraft patrolling over Southern Iraq and preventing Iraqi armed forces from using airplanes and helicopters in the region. USAF's 33rd Fighter Squadron was one of the units involved. On 27th December 1992, Capt. North led a flight of four F-16s on what seemed to be another uneventful CAP. However, Iraqi Air Force has chosen this day to probe the Coalition strength with their fastest fighter jets - MiG-25s. Several of them briefly entered the no-fly zone and successfully escaped. But one of them would venture a little too deep and Capt. North with his wingman would cut him off and force him to fight.
