In my previous video I discussed about how high insulin levels can lead to high androgen production. in this video I am going to discuss about how high androgens impact PCOS and what can we do to reduce it.
1.Women with PCOS produce excess androgens or male hormones which can lead to: facial hair, acne, irregular periods, hair loss, weight gain etc some of the most common symptoms of high androgens.
2.There is an enzyme called 5 alpha reductase which increases the conversion of Testosterone into DHT and DHT is the potent or powerful hormone which increases the risk of hair loss, acne, hirsutism, lack of ovulation etc
each women with PCOS may experience different levels symptoms depending on the intensity of insulin resistance.
3. It is important to know that high insulin can increase the activity of this enzyme which increases the conversion of testosterone into DHT creating all these complications.
4. And to add to the problem high insulin can also reduce SHBG and low levels of SHBG can lead to elevated levels of free androgens which further aggravates the condition.
So how do we minimise the symptoms or reduce the androgens. well there are some plant derived herbs which can be helpful.
- green tea: Reduces the conversion thereby reducing DHT and also increases SHBG
- spearmint tea: decreases free testosterone levels which is often elevated in PCOS. thereby reducing the symptoms of hirsutism
- black cohosh: it inhibits 5 alpha reductase and it is also good for prostate cancer.
- saw palmetto: is a plant derived anti androgen which inhibits 5 alpha reductase, it can be helpful for alopecia. acne and hirsutism
licorice: it decreases testosterone levels and is anti androgenic
white peony: even this is an anti androgenic herb and can reduce androgenic signs, taking it with licorice is shown to reduce testosterone levels
reishi mushroom: also inhibits 5 alpha reductase and can benefit the skin of PCOS by reducing acne.
chaste tree: can be helpful in hormonal balance and reducing DHT
