The inventor of the World Wide Web says today's online world is "not the way we wanted". Speaking at a 30th anniversary celebration of the internet at the Swiss centre where he invented it, Tim Berners-Lee said that with half the world's population now using "this web thing," it's important to "get the other half online as quickly as possible."
Berners-Lee created the web at the CERN physics research centre in 1989. Three decades later, he says people are unsure whether the web was a force for good in the era of U.S. President Donald Trump, Brexit and fake news. He also questions whether social media networks are supporting democracy.
He went on to say there's still hope to build a better web for the future.
