Chen Stormstout, the Drunken Panda Master from the WarCraft universe, is here to drink away his problems. He is a melee warrior with a good bit of HP and a trait that gives him some of the best damage absorption in the game. His abilities combo well together and, in the hands of a good player, Chen is a dangerous threat. He functions well as a solo tank and can be teamed with multiple assassins or a secondary off-tank with dive potential (see Anub'arak, Muradin, Tyrael and Sonya), but is more than capable of carrying the weight himself. He also holds lane like a boss.
It's important to note right away that Chen is different from other heroes in several key ways. First and foremost, he uses Brew instead of Mana. This resource can be generated by using his trait, Fortifying Brew. It grants 30 Brew per second along with temporary shields lasting for 2 seconds (64 at level 1, 544 at 20).
All of Chen's abilities require Brew to activate and the shields granted by his trait allow Chen to tank incredible amounts of damage. Also, there's a unique synergy with Chen's basic abilities and his trait in that they all cycle on 5 second cool-downs.
Chen's Q, Flying Kick, is an initiation ability. He launches himself Kung Fu-like towards his foe dealing a bit of damage in the process (55 at level 1, 245 at level 20). The damage alone won't destroy anyone, but this ability allows Chen to jump in (and out) of the battle quickly.
Chen's remaining two abilities, Keg Smash (W) and Breath of Fire (E), work well in unison. The first douses enemies in a small area in brew slowing them by 25% for 2.5 seconds and contributing a modicum of damage (15 at level 1, 110 at level 20). Additionally, a follow-up Breath of Fire on brew-soaked opponents will set them afire for 3 seconds doubling Breath of Fire's base damage (39 at 1, 210 at 20).
The heroic of choice with this build is Storm, Earth, Fire (R). The utility of Chen's "Panda Pals" is incredible allowing him to survive for extended periods of time behind enemy lines. While activated, Chen splits into 3 separate spirits which move and attack as a group. Each of these spirits gains a new health bar with 50% of Chen's original Max HP. His original abilities disappear and are replaced with a jump attack (Q) and a dodge/split (W).
Spirit Form gives Chen insane amounts of maneuverability and sustain. He essentially gets another health bar at 1.5 times is max HP for 15 seconds and 2 jumps. There is also a brief moment of invulnerability while Chen initiates the heroic enabling him to escape large, but brief bursts of damage.
Each of the spirits, though controlled together, operates in slightly different ways. Storm, the blue one, has a ranged attack. Earth, green, is a melee warrior with a 25% slow. Fire, contributes a third attack at faster speeds. When the 15 seconds run out or all of the spirits have been killed, the original Chen will respawn in the following order - Storm, Earth, Fire - depending on which spirits are still alive.
This build focuses on outfitting Chen for the solo tank role picking up some extra CC and sustain. Chug at level 4 allows Chen to refill his Brew incredibly fast and limit time spent drinking to those moments when you need the shielding. Alternatively, Amplified Healing can contribute to his sustain quite a bit.
Pressure Point on level 7 is Chen's quintessential talent. It adds a 1 second root to enemies hit by Chen's Flying Kick and can keep troublesome heroes pinned down or prevent quick escapes.
Relentless on 13 is great for teams with any measurable CC. Otherwise, A Touch of Honey increases the slow of Keg Smash to 4 full seconds. Combo-ed with Full Key at level 1, this results in an extraordinary amount of slow and full lock down on a single target when combined with Pressure Point on 7.
To finish off the build we pick up extra damage with Combination Attack at 16 and then an extra life with Resurgence of the Storm at 20. When playing Chen, watch out for interrupts. A Tychus grenade, Raynor Q, or any number of other stuns can interrupt your drink leaving you vulnerable. His escape potential is also limited pre-10.
Talents (hotkey):
Lvl 1 - Full Keg (W)/Consuming Flame (E)
Lvl 4 - Chug (Trait)
Lvl 7 - Pressure Point (Q)
Lvl 10 - Storm, Earth, Fire (R)
Lvl 13 - Relentless/A Touch of Honey (W)
Lvl 16 - Combination Attack (Q)/Combustion (E)
Lvl 20 - Resurgence of the Storm
Remember, there's always more than one way to play a hero and some of these talents will ideally change depending on the composition of both teams and the map, but this is a good start for someone with little experience looking to solo queue.
