In the 1860s, when France colonized Mexico, Porfirio Díaz, who resisted France at the time, became the president of Mexico from 1876. Under Díaz's rule, Mexico's economy gradually developed, but wealth disparity and social inequality worsened. Eventually, Díaz suffered defeat in the 1911 presidential election against the young intellectual Francisco Madero. However, soon after, Díaz's military follower, Victoriano Huerta, expelled Madero and assumed the presidency. Enraged Mexican citizens initiated a rebellion against the regime. Although the rebellion ended in the victory of the revolutionary forces, internal conflicts within the revolutionary forces led to increasing chaos in Mexico. Subsequently, many revolutionary leaders advocated for idealistic changes in Mexico, but there were no clear and substantial outcomes beyond that.
