With Blonde coming to Netflix and Ana de Armas playing American icon Marylin Monroe, director Andrew Dominik is returning to familiar ground. He’s made a career out of deconstructing myth, from a notorious criminal celebrity in his home of Australia, to the American west’s most mythical figure in Jesse James, and even the myth of the American Dream itself. Most importantly, Andrew Dominik’s films search for what’s beyond the stories that get passed down and around. Here is how he digs for the truth in the myth.
Chopper is inspired by the autobiographies of Mark Brandon Read, a story retelling the stories as told by the psychotic man who wrote the stories from his own perspective about himself. The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford finds a man grappling with his own myth while others do as well and Killing Them Softly, Dominik’s only film not based on real people, tackles the idea of the American Gangster so often portrayed in Hollywood. Blonde on Netflix looks to continue the trend, by fictionalizing reality, and investigating not only the myth itself, but the way in which we view it.
