A subject that needs to be addressed. High voltage exposure! In the past, this was not an issue, now it is. These old receivers have hazardous voltages present on the rear standby switching terminals. I have been poked many times in the past and I am an experienced operator. So it got me thinking, how about these newbies that are getting into the art of Ham shortwave radio? Do they know about what awaits them? For this demonstration, I will use a National NC-183. A great 6V6 push pull audio output receiver, super bold broadcast reception. Many of the Nationals/Hammarlunds/Heathkit/ RME, etc had exposed high voltage on the rear mute jacks. Some as high as 400VDC! Yes, this voltage can kill you, no doubt. From now on, I will not release a vintage receiver without the K1S standby safety module installed, unless it is going to a seasoned Ham operator that is aware of the risk.
