A very strong show that had a very questionable ending.
The PPV opened with the 6-woman tag match that involved Bayley’s new faction Damage Control and Bianca, Alexa, and Asuka. I enjoyed this match but it definitely wasn’t anything spectacular. Bayley pinning Bianca now sets up a RAW Women’s title match at Extreme Rules in October and I am fine with that because the feud in 2021 never got a proper conclusion.
Gunther vs Sheamus for the IC title (Fucking insane that this belt hasn’t been on a PPV since WrestleMania 37) is the next match and this was phenomenal. These two guys went out and for 19 minutes beat the fuck out of each other. This had great physicality, Sheamus being unable to hit the brogue kick due to his back, and Gunther being weak to hit the powerbomb was storytelling perfection, and Sheamus getting a standing ovation for his performance was awesome to see. Tremendous, tremendous match that is currently my MOTY in WWE. Also, I am stoked to see that Imperium is now officially back together.
Liv vs Shayna for the Smackdown Women’s title was better then expected, but it was easily the weakest match on this show. I felt sorry for these two because nothing was gonna be able to top that Gunther/Sheamus match. I wanna also mention that Liv doesn’t get enough appreciation for how good her selling is because she was on point throughout this match.
Edge & Rey vs The Judgement Day much like the 6-Women tag was good but nothing overly special. I just find it so odd that Judgement Day have lost yet another PPV match when they could’ve won this match. Dominik turing heel could’ve still been done had Rey and Edge lost the match, and I think it would’ve made more sense. Dominik being jealous could have beat them both down and said “I told you that you needed me in this match!” I don’t know if this means Dominik is gonna be added to Judgement Day, but if he does then how can anyone blame him. Any straight male would join them after getting put between Rhea’s legs…
Rollins vs Riddle is up next and this was my second favorite match on the entire show. I felt this was the best built match heading into the PPV and I thought both men delivered big time. I figured that Riddle would win after Seth’s comments about his family on RAW, but if they wanna do a rematch at Extreme Rules with a stipulation then that’s fine by me. I also find it really crazy how this was Rollins first PPV win since the Royal Rumble in January.
Roman vs Drew for the Undisputed WWE Universal title is the main event. I thought this was a really good match but man did the finish/end result absolutely suck. It genuinely felt like it was time for Roman to drop these belts and Drew has not only been built up really well but was massively over with the UK fans. Instead we had a shitty finish where Solo Sikoa got involved and allowed Roman to retain. Post match saw a stare down between Roman and Tyson Fury (Please god don’t do this match) and then Drew and Fury started singing to the crowd…. They literally gave Drew the Lex Luger treatment but instead of balloons it was songs. The only other person they’ve got left is Cody Rhodes and who knows when he’ll even be back on television. Are we positive that Triple H is running things because this whole debacle screamed Vince McMahon booking.
