This is a TAMIS procedure using robotic assistance for a rectal polyp. It can also be used for early rectal cancer.
Transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM) was the predecessor to this surgery but the instrumentation was cumbersome and expensive making it only available at special centers. TAMIS is known to have multiple advantages over traditional, transabdominal surgery. These include less pain, shorter recovery & a decrease in certain complications. Patients are often treated as an out patient and often avoid the major risks of a major bowel resection in properly chosen cases.
A surgeon with expertise in this technique evaluates the tumor to see if the patient qualifies for this procedure. Very specific criteria must be addressed. Typically general anesthesia is used and postoperatively there is very little pain.
