ALICE COOPER
The Tabernacle
Atlanta, GA
August 7, 1998
About this show: This was captured during Alice's lengthy 1995-1997 ROCK 'N' ROLL CARNIVAL tour in Atlanta. He performed a lot of songs from his most recent studio album, the 1994 release THE LAST TEMPTATION. Although I've shared this video before through trading circles, this is the first time that I've shared a copy of my master more publically.
The opening act was band called Marrs Electric, which I have absolutely no recollection of, possibly because I arrived late. I attended the show alone, which is usually preferable if I'm doing a lot of video. It helped back then to have someone to watch my back in case security happened to notice. I suppose it was a bit hard not to when someone was holding a relatively bulky camcorder in front of them. Nowadays, every is taking video with phones and security has given up policing this at most shows. This was done back in the days that you needed some serious BALLS to sneak in a video camera and brazenly try to capture the entire show.
I was on a roll during the summer of 1998 with filming local shows. In fact, I'd filmed Yes and Alan Parsons at Chastain Park just the night prior to this one, but this was really a special opportunity for me. It was at an Alice Cooper show in Albany, NY in 1986 that I made my very first audio bootleg of a concert. Even then, I knew I had only managed to capture a portion of what truly made Alice Cooper such a joy to see in concert. The theatrical nature of his shows were so integral to the Alice experience that an audio recording could hardly do it justice. At least I had the MTV 1986 Halloween broadcast to help me preserve some of my memories from what I saw that night in Albany.
Armed with a Sony Handycam 8mm camera (in glorious monoaural sound), I positioned myself in the upper balcony of this venue. My high position above the PA did add a lot of extra reverb to my audio, but it's still fairly decent overall. Although I was a bit more elevated than I would have liked to be, their were advantages to this strategy. I was able to capture mostly unobstucted shots of Alice and his band performing in such a way that would have been almost impossible from the floor or even 2nd level. I was truly in my glory in having a good enough position to follow the action on stage more smoothly than usual. I was still learning how to shoot shows at this point, but did a commendable job here overall. (I'd later learn not to zoom in so much for close ups.)
It also made it more difficult for security to see me, although they did spot me at one point during my favorite number, "Halo Of Flies". When they did emerge to do a quick sweep of the seats, I had shoved my camera underneath my seat as I sat watching the show very nonchalantly. Thankfully, I was able to shake them off by relocating to a different part of the balcony to shoot the rest of the show.
