Antisemitic crimes have been rising these last few years. Only 54% of the world's population know about the holocaust. The current American president refused to acknowledge the Jewish victims of the tragedy by using the phrase 'in the name of the perished' on World Holocaust Day.
All of this had me thinking, "What was I taught about the Holocaust? And how was I taught about the Holocaust?" I was enrolled in a fundamentalist Christian school in Florida, so, as you can imagine, the answer is 'not much'. When a teacher was asked why Hitler persecuted the Jews, the answer was 'he was demon possessed'.
As long as you are looking for demonic reasons for the Holocaust, you are ignoring bigotry, us against them, and worse: you are not learning the lessons of history.
Let's hope our ignorance does not inspire history to repeat itself.
