When I tell people that I am a midwife, I am frequently greeted with confused looks.
“Do people still have babies with midwives?”
The answer is a resounding “yes,” and even more than that, here at the UCSF School of Nursing, we are innovating on midwifery education.
In today’s complex health system, there’s never been a greater need for midwives. In California, the cesarean birth rate varies wildly from 15 percent to 70 percent, depending on the hospital. We are facing an increasing shortage of women’s health care providers, and great disparity in maternal mortality rates for women of color.
The UCSF midwifery education program promotes a model of care that disrupts the status quo: putting women at the center of their own care and supporting the normal birth process to improve quality outcomes.
My goal is to provide a depth and breadth of midwifery education so that our graduates can capably increase women’s full spectrum of options in primary care; working together with our physician and nurse colleagues to create an entire health care culture that embraces those options.
