THAI AUTHORITIES BURN A TON OF ILLEGAL DRUGS
Thai authorities recently destroyed a ton (1,047 kg) of confiscated drugs in a public display to demonstrate their commitment to fighting the illegal drugs trade in Thailand. The large pile of mixed narcotics was set alight
at the Bangkok Police Academy in front of a group of foreign embassy representatives. The drugs included 733 kg of heroin, 117 kg of morphine and 196 kg of opium, together with other assorted illegal narcotics. They were seized in a series of police operations and were long longer needed by the courts to press charges against defendants charged with possession and trafficking. The Thai government periodically destroys seized illegal drugs to show the world how serious it is about clamping down on drug trafficking -- and to dismiss speculation that seized narcotics might be resold by government officials for personal gain.
