I knew when I arrived in the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico that I wanted to experience local culture. I stayed at the postcard-perfect Barcelo Maya Grande Resort in Playa del Carmen. In less than two hours by car, I was walking the colorful streets of Valladolid. Named after the former capital of Spain, this colonial city was built in 1545. The best part? It's virtually tourist-free and offers a peek into the daily lives of the Yucatán's residents. I also made a stop in X-can, a small Mayan village where I explored the city by pedicab and met local artisans.
