Woman 1: My problem is hypothyroidism. It started when I was 37. I turned 60 last week, so it's just been a battle for a long time for me.
Dr. Marvin: Right, and that's harder, but you should... You're taking thyroid hormone replacement?
Woman 1: Not for two years, I'm like, "This is not working," so I just took myself off of this.
Dr. Marvin: Well, how do you know it's not working?
Dr. Marvin: There's lots of symptoms for that. I would suggest you be on the replacement and get your hormones into the normal range, which is not that hard if you have a person that's running the right way, because that's going to help you with your weight loss.
Woman 1: I stopped having heart palpitations, so I'm like, "Okay, it worked."
Dr. Marvin: So palpitations generally go with hyperthyroidism, usually not with hypothyroidism. So are you hyperthyroid?
Woman 1: Oh gosh, I don't know. I used to weigh 125.
Dr. Marvin: Okay. So, just so everybody knows, the thyroid controls...has something to do with metabolism. So when it's too high, it's like revving your car, you're turning your idle up on your car, it's always going, and you can get palpitations, you can have tremor, difficulty concentrating, stuff like that. Generally, lose weight, okay? And, generally, feel hot all the time. So, the hypothyroid's the opposite. Everything's slow, right, tired, you don't want to do anything, constipated. So it's hard to lose weight when you're hypothyroid.
Woman 2: That must be me. You know, it's like...
Dr. Marvin: There's a lot of people that are hypothyroid, but we treat them, and they get into the normal range with their thyroid hormone replacement and they still have a weight issue, and that's just because Americans have weight issues, hypothyroid or not. So it's additive, but usually, not solely responsible.
