Peripheral artery disease is a relatively common problem affecting upwards of 8 million adults in the United States. Essentially, it is a disease process where arteries supplying various organs and/or skeletal muscle narrow, reducing blood flow. Most individuals first notice the symptoms of this disease in their legs where blood flow is restricted, leading to pain while walking.
It's likely to be a sign of atherosclerosis, a disease process where fatty acid plaques accumulate in your arteries. It can also be caused by inflammation leading to narrowing of the arteries, or by blood clots forming in (thrombosis) or traveling to (embolism) the arteries.
