Teaching the horse to stand still and relax is another fundamental clicker skill for your horse. It is so easy to teach horses movement behaviours with clicker training and we need to make sure we balance that with also teaching the horse to stand still. This will help the horse learn to relax and wait patiently until we give them a cue to do something else. This is a behaviour we should reinforce a lot and we can gradually increase the duration the horse stand still for and then gradually add more distractions. We can then also incorporate it into things like grooming, saddling, rugging, clipping etc so that the horse learns to stand still while we are doing other things. We should then train this behaviour in lots of different environments so that the horse learns to stand still and relax even with distractions. This video series is aimed at horses that are already well handled and are used to being led etc. If your horse is really scared, wild or unhandled then you should start with teaching the horse targeting which I will cover in the next video. :)
