Join Olivia Rudkin from Quarry Bank in Cheshire, as they take you on a tour of this historic mill and community once at the heart of the global cotton trade during the Industrial Revolution. In this video, learn about the importance of the estate’s riverside location, get a glimpse of how working life used to be and discover rarely seen objects.
Quarry Bank is one of Britain’s greatest industrial heritage sites, with early connections to the textile revolution in the UK. It has also retained one of the most thorough set of records which has allowed the National Trust to understand how the mill ran, who the workers were and the plans of the mill and estate.
Established in 1784 by Samuel Greg next to the village of Styal in Cheshire, this cotton mill saw the birth of the Industrial Revolution. It was one of the first mills to be powered by water – in this case drawn from the nearby river Bollin – and the hard work of its employees.
Quarry bank was gifted to the National Trust to help protect the land and the mill from further development and ensuring that the estate was to be maintained over the years. There are many projects happening to reinstate what Quarry Bank Mill and its surrounding landscape would have originally looked like. It's thanks to members and supporters that we can continue to care for historic houses, buildings and objects in this way to keep their history alive for generations to come.
