Commonly confused with the partridge, Ruffed Grouse have a unique courtship display. Instead of making calls, they beat the air with their wings creating a vacuum. This results in a fast-paced, low-frequency drum sound that can be heard up to a 1/4 mile away even in thick brush. They are the only grouse to do this, making them the sole member of the genus Bonasa. I saw the same resident grouse on the Red Eagle/Beaver Lake trail at Glacier National Park most evenings. They usually see you before you see them, and fly away very loudly despite being mostly ground birds.
