As Senators prepare for tonight's final State of the Union address to be delivered by President Barack Obama, Republicans say the last seven years have been hard on Americans, while Democrats say the president's legacy is strong.
Following the regular Tuesday party luncheons in the Senate, the leadership of both parties spoke.
Senator Mitch McConnell, the Majority Leader, said his guest tonight will be an unemployed coal miner who lost his job because of the administration's energy plan.
Others played down what is expected to be an optimistic view to be laid out by the President.
Senator Dick Durbin, Democrat of Illinois reminded his colleagues that Obama came into office during a recession and the Republicans did little to help stimulate the economy.
Embedded in tonight's speech will be an appeal to Americans to stay the course with Democrats in the November election.
