In this video we perform a vignette test with the Metabones Speed Booster XL .64x and the Sigma 18-35mm F/1.8 DC HSM ART Lens (Nikon F-mount). The vignette tests were conducted with the in body 5-Axis Stabilization turned on and off. The field of view becomes slightly narrower with the 5-Axis Stabilization turned on which helps to eliminate vignetting. The test were performed in the 4:3, 3:2, and 1:1 aspect ratios.
In our previous video we reviewed vignetting in the 16:9 aspect ratio:

With the Sigma lens set at 18mm, the 4:3 aspect ratio produces the most vignetting around the corners of the screen. Although reduced, 20mm still produces some nasty vignetting at the corners. It isn’t until 24mm that you notice the vignetting beginning to fade. The shadowing at the corners is still undesirable. Zooming to 28mm and lastly 35mm, you can see that vignetting is reduced but not completely eliminated.
With the IBIS enable, you can see that vignetting is slightly reduced at 18 and 20mm. It’s not until 24mm and up that the difference becomes noticeable. In other words, I would avoid the 4:3 aspect ratio when using the Sigma lens. If you insist on using the lens in this aspect ratio, turn ON the IBIS. Aside from reducing vignetting, this will reduce camera shake especially since this Sigma lens does not have vibration reduction.
The 3:2 Aspect Ratio produces significantly less vignetting than the 4:3 aspect ratio. 18mm still has heavy vignetting. The shadowing at the corners is still undesirable. 20mm is better, but again 24mm will be your target focal range to see the vignetting begin to fade. Zooming to 28mm and lastly 35mm, will give you usable results.
With the IBIS enable, you can see vignetting slightly reduced at 18 and 20mm. 24mm is more noticeable. 28mm and 35mm look good. In the 3:2 aspect ratio and the focal length set to 28mm and up, the GH5 could produce some nice photos with the Sigma 18-35. Again, I would recommend enabling the IBIS.
Lastly, the 1:1 Aspect ratio produced the least amount of vignetting. This is to be expected as the entire sensor is not being used horizontally as a lot of resolution is cut out. Vignetting is fairly consistent through out the 18-35mm focal range with 28mm and 35mm producing the least amount of Vignetting.
With the IBIS enable, you can hardly see vignetting reduced at 18 and 20mm. 24mm is more noticeable. 28mm and 35mm look good.
In summary, I would recommend the 3:2 Aspect Ratio when taking photos with the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8. Enabling the IBIS and zooming in to 24mm and up, will enable you to reduced vignetting will not cutting out sensor resolution as in the 1:1 Aspect Ratio.
Finally, all video footage of the Panasonic GH5 body and screen was filmed with the Panasonic GH3 at Full HD. The HD footage was scaled up to 4K in Adobe Premiere.
