Did you know @starbucks offers FREE spent coffee grounds for composting and fertilizing plants? It's a great garden resource, so check if coffee shops in your area offer spent grounds for your garden. Bagged neatly for reuse, this nitrogen-rich organic compound can be utilized with a carbon-heavy composting ingredient (dead leaves or wood chips) in several ways. It can be added to a compost pile or bin or placed around a plant to top-dress it as a fertilizer. This is best mixed or layered on top of a carbon-heavy item, such as wood chips or dead leaves.
The terrace garden is refreshed! After the soil and mulch in my @dirtlocker cells settled out this fall, I decided to top them up with free, spent coffee grounds from @starbucks blended with free wood chips from a local millworker. Without using my compost bin, it will break down and feed the garden!
Don't spend money on compost or fertilizer when these resources can be reused and recycled at no cost! Food waste is otherwise hauled away with-fuel burning waste management trucks to a landfill or incinerator.
Rather than burn fuel to haul away a resource, this is a smart option for the garden, the environment, and your wallet.
