Live liver donation is an option for many patients in need of a transplant and can significantly shorten the wait for a new organ. With live liver donation, approximately 40-60 percent of the healthy donor’s liver is removed. Within days, the donor’s liver begins regeneration, with full growth achieved just 2-3 months following donation. For the recipient, anti-rejection medication will be required, just as it is with a deceased donor liver. Ken Washburn, MD, transplant surgeon at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, provides more specifics regarding the procedure.
