A French high-speed TGV train carrying 178 passengers from Tarbes to Paris collided with a regional express train near Denguin on Thursday injuring 40 people, some seriously.
The regional express TER train with 70 passengers on board was passing through Denguin.
For unknown reasons, the TGV train was running slowly at about 32 kilometres per hour, according to a report in the Telegraph. Some reports said the high-speed train stopped briefly and had begun moving again at the time of the accident, when the regional train crashed into it from behind.
Twelve ambulances and a helicopter were dispatched to the scene. SNCF, the national rail operator, has already started an investigation into the cause of the accident.
The collision injured 40 people. Four people, including a baby, a ten-year-old boy, a woman and the driver of the TER train, suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries.
The crash came days after the first anniversary of another train crash south of Paris in which seven people died. In a report, investigators concluded that inadequate maintenance of the railways was to blame for the fatal accident.
