In this video, Free Wifi Marketing Solutions will guide you how to mod high gain antenna for WiFi router
This time we will use D-Link DIR-865L 1750Mbps 802.11ac Dual-band Router with mydlink Cloud Services
The router is powerful with many function including Facebook WiFi that can help business connecting with their clients
However the internal antennas are so small and low gain it has 3 x 2 dBi 2.4 GHz and 3 x 2 dBi 5GHz could not cover wide area
I decided to mod this router with high gain antenna to extend it WiFi coverage
My D-Link DIR-865L 1750Mbps now enquipted with 20dBi 2.4 GHz omni high gain antenna, I will mod 5GHz in next video
First we need to open the WiFi router case. There are 3 screws, one in the back and 2 under its stand
Opening the case will void its warranty, but I prefer it rather than leaving my router with low WiFi coverage
WiFi cover are secured with some latches, so it is not easy to open, using flat screw driver will destroy the case
My trick is using plastic card such as old credit card to open those latches
If you find those latches, it is easy to open
Peace of cake. My cover is not destroyed, you can see where are those latches so it easier for you to locate them when opening yours
This is reason why I have to open my router, so small low gain antennas
I wonder why they put such a bad antenna for the beautiful full of functions router
D-Link also put some hot glue to secure the antenna pigtails but it is easy to dis-assemble it with flat head screw driver
I will use extension cord UFL to RP SMA connector to connect my external antennas to this router
And we can connect all kind of antennas with SMA male connector for example this 5 dBi
Or another long 20 dBi omni antenna
so you need pigtail cable and external antenna for the mod, let's open and see what are difference between some antennas
We open and see inside TP-Link TL-WR1043ND 5 dBi 2.4 GHz WiFi antenna
You can compare it with my D-Link 2 dBi one
And now we open Dual band 2.4 GHz 5 GHz 5 dBi antenna from TP-Link TL-WDR4300ND
We will thread the pigtail cable through a slot fom the case so we can put the antenna outside the box
I think in next mod, I will drill some holes so we can fix antennas on the case as well
I also use some hot glue to fix the pigtail from lousing out
In this first mod, I will use tape to fix antenna on the box, please see my next version when we have finished product later
my router look cool with 1 antenna
And sure it can cover better area such as my working space
