Sep 27 1917 #OTD War photographer Frank Hurley takes this photo, AWM E00822, of what he refers to as an Australian “Souvenir King!” Shown is Private John “Barney” Hines, service number: 2296, A Company, 45th Battalion, with his war trophies that he came across from POWs and on the battleground. His unit had recently advanced at the Belgian Polygon Wood, in the Ypres Sector, during the Battle of Passchendaele.

After multiple infractions during the war he was demoted even though his acts of bravery had given him multiple promotions. Medically discharged from the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) he arrived back in Australia on Oct 19 1918. Outside of Sydney he lived as a hermit and survived by growing vegetables, doing odd jobs and money from his army pension payments. At the onset of WWII he tried to re-enlist but as a 60-year-old he was rejected. On Jan 28 1958 Hines died at Concord Repatriation Hospital.
