What’s your favourite – Les Paul or SG?
Welcome to the show! It’s with some surprise when we say that – despite an embarrassment of lovely electronical guitars – TPS has been devoid of a dual-humbucker Gibson SG to date.
Now then, Mick is in search of just such a beast and thanks to a bit of chance and the generosity of Gibson, we’ve been able to borrow a flippin’ unbelievable Murphy Lab ’64 SG Standard with Maestro Vibrola. Woop!
So let’s do this – two seriously lovely Les Pauls, one jaw-dropping SG and one genuine vintage 1961 Les Paul Junior… played through a genuine ’50s Fender Tweed, a ’60s AC30, reissue Plexi Marshall and a bit of ’80s Boogie gloriousness.
Questions…
• What does R8 and R7 mean?
It’s an unofficial short name for Gibson Custom [Shop] 1958 and 1957 Les Paul models respectively. Full guitar details and names below. R9 would be a 1959 reissue. R0 is a 1960.
• How are the amps set?
- The 1953 Fender Pro-Amp is fully cranked. It’s 18 watts, ish (not 12 like Mick said).
- The 1961 Vox AC30 is in the Brilliant channel, volume at 2 o’clock
- The reissue Marshall 1987x has the channels jumped. High treble at 6, Normal at 5. The Fulltone Tube Tape echo is in the effects loop. It was too kerrrayyzzee in the front.
- The Boogie power amp is set to volume 3 in both channels. High power mode.
Enjoy the show!
