A primarily trombone jazz arrangement of the song that plays during the ending escape sequence in Super Mario Odyssey, also known as Honeylune Ridge: Escape.
With the pandemic state the world is going through right now, I really hope I can bring a little happiness to everyone with my next cover. Quarantine is not going to stop me from doing what I love, and I hope my music can help lift people’s spirits and bring hope for a better future.
With this song, I wanted to continue the professionalism I started with Endless Possibility, but now with a song from a more popular franchise, Super Mario. I used the same creating process, but had a much more efficient time thanks to my past experience with Ableton and Premiere Pro, although the video quality is unfortunately less desirable than my last cover, simply because I didn’t have access to the same camera I used, so I had to use my alright camera left at home. In the past, I’ve talked about how I love jazz, but don’t have any experience with arranging jazz. Well that is officially staying in the past because this song is my first attempt at an actual jazz cover. During the arranging process, I dipped my toes in the concept of reharmonization, watching multiple videos and reading multiple lessons, so I can start to have an idea on what jazz arranging is really like. I wouldn’t call myself an expert in reharmonization, but this video is definitely a start, and I know I’ll get better later down the line. I decided that the best first song for me to test reharmonizing would be a rock song, and there’s no better Mario rock song to choose than Break Free (Lead the Way), the second vocal song in Super Mario Odyssey. I thought it would be cool if I translated Break Free (Lead the Way) into a big band jazz song, just like the first vocal song in Super Mario Odyssey, Jump Up Superstar, by changing the whole feel to swing, adding an upright bass playing walking bass, and reharmonizing the chord changes to add spicy chords and progressions. Of course it’s not exactly “big band” because I don’t play trumpet or saxophone, but that’s okay because I had the trombones act as the entire brass section and mimic some trumpet-like melodies. To further the Jump Up Super Star style, I even started the cover with a brass section of that song to help define what I should make Break Free (Lead the Way) sound like. Finally for the solo improv section, I just thought it would cool to trade off with myself, switching between piano and trombone. I’m very proud that I now have my first official jazz cover, and here’s to hoping for more to come.
As much as I love Mario’s instrumental soundtracks, I wanted to cover vocal songs mostly, as I always want to use my skilled voice in my music covers, and out of the two amazing vocal songs in Super Mario Odyssey, Break Free (Lead the Way) was one, a rock song that could be reharmonized into jazz, and two, underrated as it’s outshined by Jump Up Superstar, which already has like a million covers under its belt. As to why I chose to do a Mario cover next, I simply felt the need to create a cover of a song from a franchise so influential to me and my childhood. At the time of planning, no new big Mario games were announced, but there were rumors of remastered 3D classics like Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine coming soon, so I thought the timing would work reasonably well, and I think I was right with a new Paper Mario announced literally a few days ago of me writing this. With Mario games playing a huge part in my life, I was of course going to drop a bunch of references to other songs in the series. I notably switched the Bowser and 25m Donkey Kong themes that played after the chorus to a medley of songs that I loved from the Mario series and that would work in a jazz feel. In particular, the medley after the first chorus focused on great Kingdom themes also in Super Mario Odyssey, and the medley after the second chorus focused on themes from other great 3D Mario games. Finally, the cover was in that style, so I had to have a section where I sang Jump Up Super Star. I love that song to pieces.
