Admiral Yi Sun-sin was a much-admired hero who won battles against the Japanese Navy and saved Joseon from ruin in the 16th century. He has also been the subject of numerous TV dramas and movies, which is why another TV series by KBS caused concern of over-exposure . But the recently aired "1592 War" is being applauded for giving rise to the new TV genre of ultra-realism drama.

A turtle ship charges toward the enemy line. This was the Sacheon naval battle, the first clash in which turtle ships were deployed. Admiral Yi Sun-sin was hit by a bullet from the Japanese, but nonetheless led the Joseon Navy to victory.
[Soundbite] "Aim with your own eyes and strike with the cannons!"
That was a scene from "1592 War," Korea's first factual drama that had combined documentary and drama. Unlike conventional historical epics which added imagination to the big historical picture, this drama focused on describing real characters and events as they actually were based on thorough historical verification.
[Soundbite] Kim Han-sol(Writer & Director) : "Rather than achieving dramatic tension about an event or a character, I wanted to delve deeper into the details, like how did Admiral Yi fight and how were the turtle ship oarers able to maneuver the ships so well."
Great feats of Lee Ki-nam who led the charges, Admiral Rah Dae-yong who built the turtle ships, and even the slaves were reenacted in precise detail to elicit more dramatic reactions.
Such a realistic drama was not a challenge to be taken lightly even by seasoned actors. Actor Choi Soo-jong, who had starred in several historical dramas, said the shooting had been unfamiliar and very demanding.
[Soundbite] Choi Soo-jong(Actor playing Admiral Yi) : "Rather than playing a figure created by an actor's reinterpretation, I tried to portray his real looks and emotions at the time. That was the most important and hardest part."
