Further East, we move to Shanghai, China’s most populated city. Notice how Shanghai outgrows its boundaries and merges with other nearby cities to form a megacity of nearly 25 million people.
In the past decades, the city has expanded in every direction and filled farmland with development. According to NASA, the most rapid urbanization took place between 2000 and 2004, adding 243 square kilometers (94 square miles) of urban landscape to the region. Also visible in the timelapse is Shanghai’s land reclamation, or the creation of new coastal land. Notice the new land forming on the eastern coast.
In response to Shanghai’s rapid growth and development, China has implemented population caps on both Shanghai and Beijing at 25 million and 23 million, respectively. The efforts aim to reduce overcrowding, pollution and congestion.
