Built by Rajendra Cholan son of Rajaraja Cholan 1 in 11th century. Rajendra changed chola's capital to gangaikonda cholapuram in resemblance of capturing Bengal and this place remained capital for Chola dynasty for next 250 years until it is defeat by pandyas.
This temple is built in similar appearance to Tanjore big temple, but smaller by 3m in order to give respect to his father Rajaraja Cholan. This temple is known for its gigantic view. The top of the vimanam can be viewed from 3km apart from the way on to this temple
