The government is making it harder for overseas Koreans or foreigners to take advantage of South Korea's health insurance program.
Under a revised bill for the National Health Insurance Act which will go into effect from October 1, foreign or overseas Korean job seekers coming to South Korea will not immediately be qualified to sign up for national health insurance.
Currently, non-Korean citizens who the government judges will clearly stay for more than three months for reasons such as studying, job hunting, and marriage, can sign up for the state health insurance program upon entering the country.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare said the revised government act tightens the loophole that allows foreigners and overseas Koreans to
immediately qualify to sign up for the national health insurance system, only to leave the country once they receive medical care.
