Pittu is a popular dish among Sri Lankans and South Indians. Simple ingredients are steamed in a cylindrical bamboo or metal tube.
Roasted plain flour pittu is our all time favourite and it can be a main dish for breakfast, lunch or dinner. It can also be made with steamed plain flour, rice flour, whole meal flour or Millet flour.
The flour along with the grated coconut is an amazing combination which gives a delectable taste.
Ingredients:
Plain (Wheat) flour 1kg
Grated coconut 150g
Warm water 700ml
Salt
Steps:
1. Roast the plain flour continuously for 10 minutes in medium flame.
2. Add salt and warm water little by little to the flour and mix.
3. Then add the mixture into a chopper or a mixie jar and rotate just only for 2 seconds.

4. Boil water in a pot.
5. Wash the bamboo tube in water and place it inside the pot.
6. Take the bamboo tube out when you see the steam.
7. Place the disc inside and add the plain flour granules inside the tube followed by grated coconut.
8. Repeat the procedure until the grated coconut on top.
9. Take the bamboo tube out from the pot after you see the steam coming out through the lid .
10. Push the Pittu out with a long stick by applying firm and continuous pressure.
Aromatic roasted plain flour pittu will be ready to be served with any side dishes.
