Unique things to do in Dorset: Traditional Wassailing at Dorset Nectar Cider Farm!

This past weekend, we got to take part in one of the wildest, most unique experiences that Dorset has to offer: the wassail at Dorset Nectar Cider Farm!

Dorset Nectar is truly a gem of the Bridport community, a family run business that makes the most delicious ciders (and apple based stuff) and also offer camping inbetween the orchard trees in the summer. We are so grateful that we get to call them our local :)

But, what is Wassailing? The word may sound familiar to you from the classic caroling song "Here we come a wassailing" (is this classic, or was I just a choir kid?), but it would appear that it's meaning isn't quite as well known!

Wassailing is an annual tradition to bless orchards and encourage fruitful harvests for the next year. It has pagen roots, and is still celebrated in most places where fruit orchards are grown. There is often singing, dancing, pantomime, cider, food, blessings and the scaring away the bad sprits from the orchard to ensure a good harvest. In the case of Dorset Nectar: there was all of the above!
