Coconut crabs are hermit crabs, though as adults they stop using a shell. These crabs are the largest terrestrial arthropods and the biggest land-living crabs. They're also known as the robber crab! They don't spend their entire lives on land as they have an aquatic larval stage that last about a month, but after that they take to the shores and never look back. In fact, they can't look back. An adult coconut crab would drown if submerged in seawater for too long! Coconut crabs are able to climb trees and they'll even hurl coconuts from these perches which is a contributing factor to their namesake. Coconut crabs are also known as robber crabs because they'll rob places of anything they can get their claws on! We hope you learn some new animal facts with today's episode of Animal Fact Files!
