F1 drivers, like many other high level athletes, don’t really share the concerns about retirement that the rest of us mere mortals have. Having generational wealth by the time you’re 30, paired with spending time away for the majority of the year making you homesick and the toll of putting your neck through the washing machine simulator that is G-force, makes retirement seem an enticing future when a driver just doesn’t have that dog in them anymore. Whether it’s due to them doing everything they feel they aimed to achieve, or coming to the realisation that they just don’t have it in them anymore or perhaps they are just over the FIA and it’s continuous changing of the sport! I mean the fans get over it too! However stepping into the void can be a tough decision for drivers to take, but a necessary one that will create space for the next generation and allow the chains of athleticism to be dropped in exchange for dietary, physical and professional freedom.
