Serpent Garlic, also known as Garlic Scape or Garlic Shoot is a great reason why you should be growing hardneck garlic varieties.
Serpent garlic are the flower stalks of hardneck garlic plants that coils like a snake.
These stalks start to appear a month or so after the first leaves. We usually cut it off the plant because leaving them on only diverts the plant's energy away from forming a large garlic bulb.
These have a mild garlic flavour and are a delicacy that can be used in the kitchen in many ways.
We usually save them, cut them into smaller pieces and freeze for later use.
Our favourite way to use it so far is by adding them to our bread. It's like instant garlic bread, it adds a light garlicky flavour and you can add other ingredients like cheese which is absolutely delicious!
