During the course of this year I aim to upload a song every day for your consideration as to whether they were good enough and sufficiently commercial to have become UK Top 20 singles. Many different genres will be represented, so if this particular one’s not your preferred style then hopefully it won’t be too long before you find one that is.
For those songs that are interesting enough for you to give them a proper listen, please press “like” if you think it could have been a hit, and “dislike” if you don’t, in the hope that we get enough votes to obtain a balanced overview.
Today’s choice is a quite amazing autobiographical recording by Maurice Gibb entitled The Bridge which I am uploading on the 19th anniversary of his untimely demise. Although the song didn’t receive an official release until it appeared as the final track on disc 3 of the ‘Mythology’ 4CD box set in 2010, it originates from 1999 when it was being considered either for inclusion on the Bee Gees 2001 ‘This Is Where I Came In’ album, or as a non-lead track on a single.
Whilst it’s beautifully simplistic instrumentally, lyrically Maurice draws heavily on his experiences as a confirmed alcoholic, and in particular his eventual acceptance in 1991 of the need to transition (walk across the bridge) from a lifestyle that was killing him, to one that would make him a better husband and father. Making his heartfelt lyrics even more poignant in this song is the participation of son Adam and daughter Samantha who sing a verse each.
Sadly it has always remained an obscure album track, and so never had the opportunity to gain sufficient radio airplay to catch public attention. Therefore there’s no official video for it, but before casting your vote or making any comments you may first of all want to watch this 1992 BBC documentary ([ Ссылка ]) about Maurice’s stay in the New Life Treatment Centre in Miami the preceding year, and the potentially devastating consequences that his addiction was having on his immediate family, as revealed in some very candid interviews which clearly explain the narrative behind this very revealing song.
Hopefully you’ll drop by again tomorrow for something completely different!
