Fatima Payman who is 27 years old is the first Afghan-born Australian elected to parliament. Elected from Perth, she is also the first elected representative to wear a hijab. In her speech at the parliament she said, "A hundred years ago, let alone 10 years ago, would this parliament accept a woman choosing a hijab to be elected?”

She further added, “I want young girls who decide to wear the hijab to do it with pride and to do it with the knowledge that they have the right to wear it."
