Many books show red as one of the primary colours on the colour wheel, but this colour is not a primary colour. Magenta of printing ink is the true primary 'red.' Magenta has a bright, rosy pink hue which will produce red when mixed with yellow. Red therefore is a secondary colour.
Brick red, vermillion and cadmium red all contain considerable amounts of yellow and can be made by mixing primary red with yellow.
This means that orange is not a secondary colour at all, but a tertiary colour.
Beware of art pigments that exhibit 'magenta' on the tube, which is not the same as magenta of printing ink. I have found permanent rose to be close to primary red.
