Cary Middlecoff, the 1949 champion, captured his second U.S. Open by edging two fellow past champions – Ben Hogan and Julius Boros – by one stroke on Oak Hill Country Club’s East Course. Middlecoff one-putted seven times in the final round, while Hogan missed a 3½-footer and made bogey on the 71st hole and Boros lipped out a 20-foot birdie try on the final green that would have tied the former dentist from Memphis, Tenn., at 1-over 281.
