The Labour peer and former shadow attorney general, Baroness Chakrabarti, has warned that the government's attempt to redefine extremism is "state-sponsored cancel culture" that will fail.
She told Sky News there are likely to be legal challenges, with groups and individuals incorrectly accused of being involved in extremism.
She said: "It's never going to work. The way that you fight extremism is that you put your own house in order.
"And obviously, I'm going to mention the alleged comments of Mr Hester about my friend and colleague Diane Abbott, which would meet anybody's definition of extremism, because we were talking about misogynistic race, hatred and even... threatening references."
