Hans-Ulrich Rudel was a prominent German military leader during World War II.
He was a Stuka dive-bomber pilot and was one of the most highly decorated German serviceman of the war.
He flew over 2,500 combat missions, and was credited with the destruction of 519 tanks, one battleship, one cruiser, 70 landing craft and 150 artillery emplacements
He was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds, one of the highest military decoration of wartime Germany.
He was also the only person to be awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Golden Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds.
After the war he was arrested by the American forces but was eventually released in April 1946.
He died in 1982, his legacy is still controversial due to retaining staunch national socialist views throughout his life.
