According to Ayurveda, winter is ruled by ethereal vata dosha. Vata’s qualities are cold, light, dry, mobile, rough, and hard—basically
all the qualities you can experiences on a winter day. In order to counteract the inevitable forces of vata,
we seek to balance with opposites. Treat dry with moist, and balance cold with warmth.
I like to use ginger root as my defense against dark, cold, and flu.
Ginger is used widely in most Eastern forms of medicines like Ayurveda, Chinese, Unani and Tibetian medicine.
The beautiful rhizome ginger has an abundance of healing properties and is thought of in Ayurveda as “universal medicine.”
Referred to as ardrakam or shuntha in Sanskrit, ginger is pungent (spicy), while at the same time sweet and warming.
It’s the perfect antidote for chill and damp.
Ginger has many benefits, including
Analgesic—reduces the sensation of pain
Antiemetic—helps with nausea
Aromatic—uplifting scent
Carminative—relieves flatulence
Diaphoretic—induces sweating
Digestive—stimulates digestive fire to help break down and assimilate nutrients with more ease
Expectorant—helps clear mucus
Nervine—soothes fragile nerves
Sialagogue—increases the secretion of saliva
Stimulant—gets circulation flowing.
Latest research has shown that it has immuno-modulatory, anti-tumorogenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-hyperglycaemic and anti-emetic actions.
It is a digestive stimulant. In Ayurveda it is said that it promotes digestion and also helps in whetting the appetite.
It also improves the assimilation and transportation of nutrients. Fresh ginger can be cut into strips. These can be soaked in lime juice and salt and then dried in the sun. These pieces of dried ginger can be eaten before lunch to achieve the results.
It is very useful in colds and coughs. Whenever a cold begins, drinking ginger tea helps. Ginger can be cut into slices and boiled with water on a low heat for at least half an hour. To this cooled decoction add some honey. Drinking this will help relieve colds and coughs.
