Karbaschi gets 5 years for corruption
=====================================
A Tehran court on Thursday (23/7) sentenced the capital's reformist mayor, Gholam-Hossein Karbaschi, to five years in prison on corruption charges. It also barred him from public life for 20 years. Karbaschi, 44, had been charged with offences ranging from embezzlement to mismanagement and illegal election campaign contributions. Throughout his trial he insisted he had never stolen a single rial and said the charges against him were political. The mayor is a close ally of President Mohammad Khatami. He was also sentenced to 60 lashes of the whip, which were suspended for four years, and fined one billion rials (350,000 dollars). He was also ordered to return to the public coffer 17.6 billion rials (six million dollars) in allegedly illegal "loans" he issued to various people or institutions. Karbaschi, who was suspended ahead of the trial, has 20 days to appeal his sentence, which is suspended pending the outcome. He did not show up in court for the verdict but was represented by one of his two lawyers.
