Previously we spoke about Masao Yoshida, one of the hero of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant disaster, one of the only 2 Level 7 nuclear accidents.
The other Level 7 Nuclear accidents is the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster, which occurred on 26th April 1986.
What is now known as the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant was known as the V.I. Lenin Nuclear Power Station back in 1986 when Ukraine was still part of the Soviet Union. (Photo by Mond)
It was commissioned in 1977 and by 1986, there was 4 working nuclear reactors, with 2 under construction. (Photo by Cls14)
Under the Soviet Union, the Power Plant was not sparking clean. Reactor 1 had a partial meltdown in 1982, however, things were covered up.
The nuclear fallout from the disaster affected much of Europe, with heavy contamination affecting Belarus, Ukraine and Russia.
The nuclear outbreak was kept silence from the world, until Sweden detected increased radioactive particles in their region.
Most affected were the Red Forest, a 10 km² area beside Chernobyl Power Plant, is a forested area that received the most radioactive contamination, about 20x that of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. (Photo by Timm Suess)
What exactly happened? On 25th April 1986, a planned simulation test commenced to simulate the shutdown of a reactor in the event of a station blackout. A combination of insufficient training and design flaws resulted in explosions that blew off the entire reactor’s encasing. (Photo by Alan Levine)
Here comes the story of the 3 brave man that saved Europe. Unknown heroes doing suicidal things that saved much of Europe without them knowing.
After the initial sets of explosions, the reactor lay burning and melting. Beneath the reactor is a huge pool of water. Water that is meant to be used by emergency cooling pumps. This backup water is now a disaster waiting to happen.
The melting nuclear fuel, together with a mixture of burning graphite will burn through the through the concrete floor of the reactor. Melted nuclear fuel rods will form Corium, and once Corium burns through the floor and reaches this huge pool of water, KABOOM.
It would create a massive steam explosion that will blow radioactive material to much of Europe. Such is the potential hazard of this explosion is that according to the School of Russian and Asian Studies, the steam explosion “would have wiped out half of Europe and made Europe, Ukraine, and parts of Russia uninhabitable for approximately 500,000 years.”
To make matters worse, the corridors leading to the pool is now flooded with radioactive waters from firefighting efforts.
To release all the water, engineers had to open its sluice gate, located in a flooded corridor. This suicidal mission landed on engineers Alexei Ananenko and Valeri Bezpalov and shift supervisor Boris Baranov.
The consequence is so huge and the environment so toxic that it could likely be the last thing these 3 men do. They were given the choice to refuse, in which Alexei Ananenko replied, “How could I do that when I was the only person on the shift who knew where the valves were located?”
The role of the engineers were to locate the valves and release the water. The role of shift supervisor Boris Baranov was to light their way with a lamp, which successfully failed in the water, leaving all 3 to navigate the area in darkness and by touch.
As half of Europe is still surviving, yes, they succeeded in their mission.
Did the Corium burn through the concrete? Yes it did. Did a steam explosion happen? No, because the water was gone by the time the Corium reached the basement.
The Corium later formed a structure that is known is the Elephant’s Foot.
All 3 staffs suffered Acute Radiation Poisoning after releasing the water. It was subsequently reported by many sources that all 3 died shortly and were buried in lead coffin due to their radioactive bodies.
However, some source suggest that all 3 has survived. No matter what, it is true that they saved Europe, and with the cover up nature of the Soviet Union, their heroic deeds was not well known nor recognised until recently.
