Despite initial scepticism, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has kept his unity government together for one year. When he came to power, PM Anwar promised good governance, a clamp down on corruption, and to create a "Malaysia for all Malaysians". He also made the economy and cost of living his main priority.

But the high cost of living and persistent racial stratification remain big hurdles to his rule. The August state elections was seen as a referendum on his government, where the ruling coalition lost some important state seats to the opposition.
