The CDC is warning about a new tickborne disease that may be worse than Lyme disease.
This week, the U.S. CDC added Maine to a list of New England states where “babesiosis" is now considered an endemic, meaning it's here to stay, though Maine's CDC has considered it an endemic in Maine for years.
The potentially deadly disease, like Lyme disease, is carried and transmitted by deer ticks.
Symptoms include fever, chills and drowsiness.
Cases jumped in Maine, with just nine reported in 2011 compared to 138 reported in 2019.
To protect yourself, the Maine CDC says if you're heading into the woods, wear long sleeves and pants, and tucking your pants into your socks helps prevent ticks from getting onto your legs.
Repellent also helps keep them away.
