Lueneburg - 21 April 2015
1. Former Auschwitz guard Oskar Groening leaving court
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Hans Holtermann, Oskar Groening's lawyer:
"Mr. Groening made a long statement about the things he did in Auschwitz, and he confessed that in a moral way he is guilty in the Holocaust and in the end the decision whether he is guilty or not has to be taken by the court that can not be made by Mr. Groening."
3. Groening walking towards car
4. SOUNDBITE (German) Thomas Walter, attorney representing Holocaust survivors:
"That is a complete different course than in other lawsuits which never progressed, that is what happened a lot in the past years here. (Journalist: what do you mean?) A completely different course because Groening is testifying, he is not playing sick, he is at the same age like (John) Demjanjuk, but is not wearing a baseball cap and does not lie in bed and that is a very positive sign for that lawsuit."
5 . Various of Groening getting in car
STORYLINE
A former Auschwitz guard accepted on Tuesday that he bears a share of the moral guilt for atrocities that took place at the camp.
Oskar Groening, 93, acknowledged having helped collect and tally money as part of his job of dealing with the belongings stolen from people arriving at Auschwitz.
That earned him the moniker "Accountant of Auschwitz."
Speaking to media after the opening of the trial, Groening's lawyer said that it is up to the judges to decide whether he deserves to be convicted as an accessory to murder.
Thomas Walter, an attorney representing Holocaust victims, said the fact that Groening was in good health and was cooperative was a good sign.
He referred to the case of John Demjanjuk, who was found guilty of being an accessory to the murder of over 28-thousand people while a guard at Sobibor camp in Nazi-occupied Poland.
Demjanjuk was sentenced to five years in prison in 2011.
The 91-year-old died in a home for the elderly, after being released, pending an appeal.
