(16 Aug 2014) The Foreign Minister of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited the Northern Kurdish Region of Iraq on Saturday where he met with the region's president Massoud Barzani.
At a joint news conference, Steinmeier said his government made extra money available for humanitarian aid.
A day earlier the European Union forged a unified response to the rapid advance of Islamic militants in Iraq and the resulting refugee crisis, allowing direct arms deliveries to Kurdish fighters - called the Peshmerga - battling the Sunni insurgents.
Several EU nations pledged more humanitarian aid.
